Over a thousand people turned up to protest against Winston Peters latest election stunt - to distract attention from a tanking economy, Peters has decided he is going to define for all time, by law, human sexuality.
Forty years ago, it was against the law to be gay. Peters was 41 years old when homosexuality was decriminalised. The name of his proposed law is the " Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill" but the aim of it is nothing to do with gender and all about appealing to Trump supporters in New Zealand.
Peters knows he doesn't need to be popular. He just needs 5% to get back into parliament so he is battling it out with Act's David Seymour to try and import American culture wars to NZ.
Unite doesn't have a position on what gender you should be, and we aren't going to try and define what a man or a woman is.
All the union cares about is working class power and that means standing up for your mates if they are being bullied - whether that's because of their accent, or their fashion sense, or their gender.
