Unite - the union for call centre workers
Tue 8 Sep 09

On Friday 4th of September union delegates from some of Auckland’s biggest call centres met for a training day and for workshops on health & safety; bargaining, resolving employment problems, representing members in a disciplinary matter and building worker’s power through organising and campaigning.
During the day we got them to talk about what Unite means to them, why they joined or why they became a union delegate.

Delegate training day a success
Wed 2 Jul 08
Twenty nine delegates from McDonald's, Skycity Cinemas, Berkeley's Cinemas, KFC, Pizza Hut and Starbucks joined organisers at Unite for a training day on Sunday 29 June.
The day covered some basics, including seminars on disciplinary procedures, collective bargaining, recruitment and on-site organising.
There was also a plenary session which covered the achievements this year in the fast food and cinema industries and report back sessions from the bargaining table.
Delegates had the chance to discuss how to resolve problems at work and how they can organise their sites better for negotiations. Problems were raised from across the industry including the loss of hours worked from the fast foods and problems with sick pay being paid out from the cinemas.
Delegates Day a Success
Wed 19 Mar 08
Unite's delegates training day held in Queen Street on 28 February was a huge success with 58 delegates turning up and a stronger presence than usual from the fast foods.
There was a diverse range of activities during the day including role plays, a documentary screening, and some healthy debate among the members.
Overall it was a great day for all involved and organisers hope to see many more members at the next training day in April.
Some improvements that have been proposed for the next training day are a different venue with some smaller spaces for workshops, more time for discussion, an onsite technician and more vegetarian food.

Delegate Training day paves the way for new Unite education
Fri 2 Mar 07
We were very pleased with the delegate training day we held on 28 February. The day was attended by 70 delegates and members and was the last opportunity to use EREL leave from 2006.
This meant there were several sites we could not invite delegates from because the EREL leave allocation for 2006 had already been used. Our 2007 allocation will be available shortly and along with it is a much extended range of courses education and training courses Unite will be able to offer members.
We have been given funding to provide more than 30 two-hour courses along with several full day courses during the year.
Unite 2007 education programme
Fri 2 Mar 07
2007 sees a big expansion of Unite’s education programme for members and delegates.
We have been given a much expanded budget and will be running a wide range of courses around the country.
We have funding for 25 two-hour courses for new members, 12 one-day courses for delegates and seven “education days”. A programme has been drawn up to spread the courses around the country. For example two of the “education days” will be organised for Christchurch, two for Wellington and three for Auckland.
Details of up-coming courses will be given in future issues of Unite News.
