Paid Parental Leave

To be eligible for parental leave the employee:
- Must have been employed by the employer for the 6 months or 12 months before the expected due date of delivery
- Must work at least an average of 10 hours a week, with at least 1 hour in every week or 40 hours in every month
- Must not have been on a previous period of parental leave within the 12 months before the expected due date of delivery.


The 6 month eligibility criteria entitles the employee to:
- 10 days special leave for women during pregnancy
- 14 weeks paid maternity leave
- 1 week unpaid partners/paternity leave


The 12 month eligibility criteria entitles the employee to:
- 10 days special leave for women during pregnancy
- 14 weeks maternity leave
- Up to 52 weeks extended leave, which can be shared between partners
- 2 weeks unpaid partners/paternity leave

The mother can transfer up to 14 weeks paid parental leave to father/partner. The father/partner is entitled to share remaining unpaid leave up to a total of 52 weeks (including 14 weeks paid parental leave).

Parental leave is also available to couples that are adopting a baby.

The maximum payment for paid leave is the lower of $429.74 (before tax) or 100% of your normal gross pay.
IRD pays the money directly your bank account each week. It is able to be shared between partners if both are eligible for leave and the mother transfers this to
her partner.
