Rosters and Hours of work in Cinemas

Over the last month several issues have been raised with Unite organisers regarding security or hours and roster protocols, the following is a summary of what your contract says about these important issues.

Skycity

  • Minimum of 3 hours will be paid per shift.

  • Rosters will be posted by 5pm on the Monday before the working week begins.
  • Rosters can be altered after posting, however if this is happening to you regularly then you should contact your organiser.
  • When available working hours increase existing staff will be given the opportunity to take these up before new staff are hired to cover them.
  • Hours exceeding 10 per day or 40 per week are paid at 1.5 your ordinary rate, managers should not roster you for this without your agreement.
  • You can request to be rostered more than 40 hours per week or 10 hours per day but if you are given these hours by request you will not be paid overtime.
  • You have the right to waive your unpaid half hour break if you do not wish to take it.

Hoyts

  • Minimum of 3 hours paid for any shift worked.

  • Rosters posted 3 days in advance of the working week.
  • Rosters can be changed after posting but if this is happening to you regularly please contact your organiser.
  • Changes in availability and shift swaps need to be authorized by your complex manager.
  • You will be notified one week in advance of your managers intention to hire new staff and given an opportunity to take up available hours if you wish.
  • If a staff meeting occurs outside of your normal shift hours you will be paid at your full rate for any time spent at the meeting.

Berkeleys

  • All hours over 10 per day or 45 per week will be paid at overtime rate of 1.5 times your normal rate per hours.

  • Overtime is not paid if a shift you have swapped onto causes you to exceed 10 hours per day or 40 hours per week or if you request to be rostered for these times.
  • Minimum of 3 hours pay per shift unless you voluntarily leave earlier.
  • Rosters will be up by 5pm on the Monday before the working week commences.
  • Changes in availability need to be approved by your Complex manager.
  • Staff meetings are paid at full hourly rate.
  • Rosters will be emailed to you if you provide an email address.
  • You managers will notify one week before hiring new staff and you will be given an opportunity to take the available hours.
  • You must have at least 9 hours between the end of one shift and the start of the next, if this does not happen your 2nd shift will be paid at 1.5 times your normal hourly rate.
  • Swapping onto a shift which will cause this to happen excludes you from this allowance.
  • Projectionists who are required to stay on site during their half hour break will be paid for the break.
  • If your 15 minute breaks are not given to you then you are entitled to have the time missed added on to your daily pay.

Important note for all brands

  • Nothing in any of our agreements should present you from working more then 40 hours per week or being paid for all the hours you work at the full rate each week.

  • Often complex management does not know about some of these rules or do not want to give you the minimum requirements, it is important that you are aware of what rights you have.
  • If you feel that you are being denied any of these rights on a regular basis please contact you organiser or call 0800 2 UNITE.
