Call Centre Horror Stories

The following are some of the bad experiences call centre workers in New Zealand have had to endure. Many Australian call centre companies have set up shop across the Tasman so they can pay kiwi workers lower wages and offer worse working conditions than they could get away with in Australia. Unite has teamed up with The National Union of Workers to organise call centre workers on both sides of ditch.

The Horror stories....

Leper Colony
Digipoll's Hamilton office attempted to bully members out of the union by segregating them into another building away from where non-union employees are working. Someone even put up a sign saying "LEPER COLONY".
Hope no-one gets sick...
Workers at a call centre do not even have the most basic of health and safety items available such as anti-septic wipes to clean shared workstations, headsets and mouthpieces before use.

Blue screen of no pay
Workers at a call centre get sent home with just an hour's pay after turning up to do a six-hour shift because their computer breaks down.

Our mistake - your loss
Workers get sent home without pay when the person doing the roster has booked too many staff and there aren't enough computers for everyone.

On your marks...
There is a scramble amongst workers at the start of each shift to get a pair of reasonable headphones and chairs rather than be left with broken gear through the shift.

Blood-sucking parasites AND fleas
In one CATI room the carpet is worn through and is often uncleaned. Because of this it has been infested with fleas. One worker was bitten in the leg and ended up in hospital.

Who needs a 90 day law?
One companies policy is that if you don’t make target you aren’t allowed any shifts. You don’t even have a right to further training or a second chance.

Hello...hello...is anyone there?
One call centre is so hot in summer that people faint!
